A debut for Bulgaria in 1896

charles champaud_copyFive men represented Bulgaria in the first modern oltmpics in Athens in 1896 - Todor Yonchev, Panayot Belev, Ilia Penchev, Dimitar Iliev and Charl Champo, who is a swiss teacher, working in Bulgaria. He won the first ever points for the country finishing fifth in vault.

sportsmen. Four athletes, seven competitors in cycling and two in equestrian as well as the football team travell to Paris for the olympics. Vladimir Stoychev finishes 11th in equestrian.

Bulgaria wins first olympic medal in “Helsinki 52” – it`s a bronze medal for the boxer Boris Georgiev. 63 sportsmen form the Bulgarian group, 9 of them are women.

1956s nikola_stanchevFirst olympic golg is won four years later in “Melbourne 56”. Nikola Stanchev wins in the freestyle wrestling.
