The Bulgarian rowers made their debut at the Olympics in 1968 in Mexico – Atanas Zhelev and Yordan Valchev won the forth place for doubles in the double sculls.

The most successful Olympics for Bulgaria were in Montreal in 1976. The Bulgarian national team took two titles and a silver medal. Zdravka Yordanova and Svetla Otsetova triumphed with the gold medal for the scull doubles, and Siika Kelbecheva and Stoyanka Gruicheva for the pairs without coxswain. Women’s quadruple sculls without coxswain took the silver. In 2000 in Sidney Rumiana Neikova won the first medal in the most prestigious discipline in rowing, the skiff – which was silver.

Four years later in Athens the first medal in the skiff discipline – men was won by the Burgas-born Ivo Yanakiev – bronze.
