Bulgaria’s male basketball team made its debut at the Olympics in Helsinki in 1952. The team, led by Veselin Temelkov, ranked seventh. Bulgaria’s best basketball Olympic performance was in “Melbourne ‘56”. The national team, coached by Lyudmil Katerinski, became fifth. In “Rome '60” the team reached 16th place, and in “Mexico '68” – tenth.

Bulgaria’s female team has so far participated three times at the Olympic Games and it has won two medals. In “Montreal ‘76” the national female players got the bronze medal, and the silver in “Moscow ‘80”. Both participations were coached by the senior coach Ivan Galabov. In“Seoul ‘88” Ivan Lepichev led the team to the fifth place.

Bulgarian referees have also performed well at the Olympics. Bozhidar Takev was the referee at the men’s final between the USA and the Soviet Union in Tokyo in 1960, and Artenik Arabadzhiyan was given the same chance at the men’s finals also between the USA and the USSR, but in “Munich ‘72”.
