The Bulgarian weightlifters made their debut on the Olympic podium in “Melbourne ‘56”. The range of movements at the competition included three types– lift, snatch, and clean and jerk. Ivan Abadzhiev ranked seventh in the 67,5 kg category, and Ivan Vasilev (90 kg) – fifth. With his success Vasilev won the first points from the Olympic Games for Bulgaria. The first medal in weightlifting was won by Norair Nurikyan – gold in “Munich ‘72”. In “Montreal ‘76” Nurikyan won the title again and became the only double Bulgarian Olympic champion in this sport. For the first time in Montreal the movements became of two types – snatch and clean and jerk.

Bulgaria’s most successful Olympic Games were in “Munich ‘72” - 3 gold and 3 three silver medals, and later from ”Moscow ‘80” the nationals won for the country 2 titles, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.
The youngest Olympic champions in weightlifting are three. Yordan Mitkov (“Montreal ‘76”), Asen Zlatev (Moscow ‘80) and Sevdalin Marinov (“Seoul ‘88”) won their titles at the age of 20.

In the women’s championship Milena Trendafilova won the first points from Olympic Games for Bulgaria– 4th place from “Sidney 2000”.
