Artistic Gymnastics

Bulgaria had its representative in the gymnastics tournament at the very first modern Olympic Games “Athens 1896”. The Swiss trainer Charles Champout contested in three individual disciplines under the name Champov. He finished at the prestigious fifth place in the jumps discipline and thus won the first two points from Olympic Games for Bulgaria. Bulgaria reached 11th place at the final ranking. The first medal was won by Velik Kapsazov – bronze for his rings performance in “Rome 60”.

Twenty years later in “Moscow ‘80” Stoyan Delchev received the first Olympic title in this sport. The most successful Bulgarian gymnast is Yordan Yovchev with 4 medals from two editions of the Olympics. In “Sidney 2000” the contestant from Plovdiv got the bronze medal in the rings and floor exercises disciplines, and in “Athens 2004” the judges gave Yovchev second place in rings and third for his floor exercises performance.

The first and only medal for a Bulgarian female competitor was won by Diana Dudeva – bronze in the floor exercises in “Seoul ‘88”. Lyubomir Geraskov won the gold for his pommel horse piece at the same Olympiad.
