Sonya Dangalakova was the first Bulgarian woman swimmer to win a point from the Olympic Games by finishing 6th at the 400 m medley race in “Moscow ‘80”. The great success for the Bulgarian swimming came 8 years later. In “Seoul ‘88” Antoaneta Frenkeva won the first medal for Bulgaria in this sport – bronze for the 200 m breaststroke race. In the same discipline Tanya Bogomilova finished fourth.

The two contestants also participated in the 100 m breaststroke final. Bogomilova won the title with a new Olympic record – 1, 07:95 min, and Frenkeva received her second medal - silver.

Bulgaria has not participated in the diving events of the Olympic Games. The largest success in this discipline belongs to Petra Georgiev – European title in springboard in “Rome ‘83”.

It was as late as the games of “Athens 2004” that Bulgaria’s synchronized swimming contestants deputed at the world’s largest forum. The duet Asya Anastasova and Bogdana Zareva became 20th in the Greek capital.
